Nuggets From McNeal

On April 10, our church was pleased to host author Reggie McNeal in a one day seminar on the future on the church in America. Reggie is Director of Leadership Development for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and author of The Present Future and A Work of Heart. The conference was astounding and like an information dump truck had just backed up and buried us up to our necks. Below are some of the comments made by Reggie.

Don’t count critics; weigh them.

Talking about the future will lead Satan to crank up enough background noise that we cannot hear God.

Christianity is the fasted growing religious/spiritual group in the world today:
175,000 new Christians in the world each day

One church in [a strong Muslim country] has over 30,000, meeting in over 300 locations.

In 1900, 80% of Christians were white, Western, northern hemisphere. In 2000, 80% were non-white, non-Western and southern hemisphere. The kingdom is breaking out all over.

Every preacher ought to preach a sermon series called, “Dumb Questions Jesus Asked.”

The church in North America is not like the Pharisees–we are the Pharisees, and Jesus does not like Pharisees.

The Pharisees clumped together and built a parallel culture–refuge theology is Pharisaical. When dealing with Pharisaism, we are dealing with a religion that has nothing to do with Jesus. They have a heart for religion, but not a heart for God.

The missional church is the most radical resorting of Christians since the reformation. Those who are missional have more in common with those in other tribes than with those in their own tribe who don’t get it.

The kingdom of God is all about people, and God has seeded the value system of the younger generations (Xer’s and millenials) that will feed the shift He has begun.

Kingdom growth is profoundly anti- what we have typically been doing.

The church is not the destination; the kingdom is the destination. Jesus does not say, “Thy church come.” He spends 40 days before His ascension teaching about the kingdom. Acts closes with the kingdom. Jesus uses “church” twice, but “kingdom” 90 times. When the kingdom breaks out, things change. People’s lives get radically re-altered; their entire worlds get re-ordered.

God says to Abram, “I’m blessing you so that you can bless all those people who are not like you.” God reguarly blesses people with whom He disagrees.

Our conversation rate has to go up before our conversion rate can go up.

In a missionary culture a person does not look to the central hub for direction.

2% of people in apartment complexes attend any church.

There is not one county in America that has grown in percentage of Christians to the total population in the past decade.

The “post-congregationlist” category is at 5% of the population and will go to 30% in the next 20 years.

Newtonian physics was the basis for modernity while quantum physics is the basis for postmodernity. It teaches that inner space is just as vast as outer space.

Most people are burned out from dealing with prolonged trivia.

Modernity’s standard is mass standardization and mass production made it possible.
Postmodernity’s standard is mass customization and techological production is making it possible.

Humankind likes to work off prediction and planning. Most of the stuff that impacts our congregations happens outside our meetings and it is stuff that we cannot plan for.

People who live by a missionary set of values cannot abide those with a “club member” set of values.

The bandwith is expanded in a missional church: how many conversations are we having, how much life interface is taking place, how is our community service component, how many community leaders are we praying for, how many teachers have we partnered with, how many community groups have used our facility?

Great stuff. Also, on the Sunday night preceding this meeting, Reggie did a talk of generations in the church. It was fabulous. I would highly recommend giving it a listen and getting it to your key leaders, especially if you are in a transitional situation.

The first 15 people who leave their name and mailing address in the comments section will receive a free CD of that talk compliments of New Bethany.

Marty, I meant the 2.75, but I was just harrassing you for the fun of it.

    Joe,
You seem like a happy dude with a weird sense of humor.:)

  27. Tim Sweatman says:

Man, I’ve got to start getting online earlier in the day! Fortunately I had the privilege of hearing McNeal speak at the KBC last November, and I’ve read The Present Future. And I may be going to hear him again in Lexington next week. I’ve wondered if the people at the SCBC have read his stuff, because he definitely is not a fan of the church industry. His critique of American churchianity should make all of us pause and examine what we’re really focusing on.

  28. joe kennedy says:

Is it bad that when I hear the name “Reggie McNeal” the FIRST person to come to mind is the former Texas A&M quarterback?

    Probably.

    Razorbaptist, I am.

Why do I feel like I just walked into a bar and ordered for everyone?

Seriously, the next 20 are on me Marty. I will call you tomorrow and find out where to send the check.

  31. Arkansas Razorbaptist says:

    Joe,
Everytime I see your name I think about the son of a drunk who cheated on his wife, D-Mass. Apart from that your’s is a fine name.
Where did you get the code for the items on the left margin of your blog. Your blog looks great — the best. E-mail me, please.

    Kevin,
What a sweet suggestion with the .39 cents and all — you’re drowning in a sea of estrogen. Just kidding, it was very thoughtful and a great idea for next December.

  33. art rogers says:

In the “Intro to Missiology” class Monday (SBTS Extension in Nashville), they had the DOM from Dyers, TN in to speak. I have a friend in that class who said his ideas, and what they were doing, were “hooked up right!” All along this same line.

Also, somebody made a comment in the class but then said they had better shut up before they ended up on SBC Outpost. My friend all but broke my arm to keep me from posting the guy’s name. I thought it would be funny, but he didn’t want to offend anyone. He’s all sensitive like that. Anyway, you know who you are and you made it.

  39. Evangelical Orthodoxy says:

I am really pleased to see this philosophy of mission finally making it into the SBC. This logic has been permeating those evil, liberal seminaries and other heretics for quite some time. I found the following particularly helpful:

    1. Don’t count critics; weigh them.
    — Particularly poignant for fundamentalists to consider.
    2. Christianity is the fasted growing religious/spiritual group in the world today:
175,000 new Christians in the world each day.
    — This is interesting if accurate. I am not sure though … statistics are fuzzy like that.
    3. In 1900, 80% of Christians were white, Western, northern hemisphere. In 2000, 80% were non-white, non-Western and southern hemisphere. The kingdom is breaking out all over. — One of the most important nuggets … if we could only get Southern Baptists to realize Jesus was not a white Westerner. This is key to the Landmark discussion. A church in othe parts of the world need not institutionally like a SBC church.
    — Been posting this on hear for months. Nothing is more clear or more true in regards to the SBC.
    — Tom Wright makes some excellent theological arguments along these lines.
    6. God says to Abram, “I’m blessing you so that you can bless all those people who are not like you.” God reguarly blesses people with whom He disagrees.
    — Don’t tell some folks this.
    7. People who live by a missionary set of values cannot abide those with a “club member” set of values.
    — David Bosch really helps here.
    8. The bandwith is expanded in a missional church: how many conversations are we having, how much life interface is taking place, how is our community service component, how many community leaders are we praying for, how many teachers have we partnered with, how many community groups have used our facility?
    — This is exceptional. On hindrance in Baptist life IMHO has been a focus on counting baptisms to the detriment of discipleship and the Christian life. That is why our church’s are frought with Sunday Christians. A great irony is that while Baptists probably have the broadest education ministry, the average Baptist’s spiritual depth goes about half an inch below the surface. Many of our problems can be rooted in this reality.

Anyway … for what it is worth.

  50. Jamie Wootten says:

Maybe Marty is actually a mole for the SBC Gestapo??? Instead of a package in the mail, everyone may get a personal home visit!

  51. Dorcas says:

Ok, I’m not saying they are connected but … “former event coordinator” … “mole for the SBC Gestapo” … has Marty gone to the dark side?!

Seriously Marty - you’re the best! But … If you are sending people for a personal home visit, put me at the end of the list so I have time to clean house.

  53. joe kennedy says:

The SBC Gestapo? The Green Coats? Hah. (Nice to see you’ve gone public, Howie… I mean Mark.)

  54. RMc says:

Reggie was in Az last year for our big “everybody in the state SBC churches come to Phoenix in August so we can do training” event. I had read a couple of his books at that point, so I was expecting a lot of what he had to say (it was still good though.) I loved the sucking sound in the room when he made comments that some considered disparaging…… Almost like someone stepping on an O2 cord. ….. and he’s one of us too!!!!!

  55. MarkSpence says:

If you are in the DFW area- North Richland Hills Baptist Church is hosting Reggie McNeal on August 20th at about 6pm. For more info email me at mark@nrhbc.org.

Also, if you haven’t read The Present Future- do as soon as possible.
